Here’s a new way to celebrate the New Year in Charlotte! Charlotte New Year’s Day 5K takes place in University City, and runs right along the LYNX Blue Line on North Tryon Street.
The race starts at 10 a.m. at the Old Concord Road Station, and finishes in the Grand Promenade Shopping Center, which is right past the McCullough Station and diagonally across the street from Shoppes at University Place and the JW Clay Blvd Station.
There is also a Fun Run for kids at the Grand Promenade.
Entry to the 5K is $35 in advance and $40 the day of the race and includes:
- Race bib with timing chip
- Long sleeve runner’s shirt
- All-day LYNX pass for the day of the race
The Fun Run for kids is $5 and includes a train whistle.
- 8:30 am – Race Day Registration/Packet Chip Pickup
- 9:45 am – Bag Drop Closes
- 9:50 am – Pre-race Ceremony and Instructions
- 10:00 am – 5K Race Start
- 10:15 am – 1 pm – Post Event Party
- 11:00 am – Awards Ceremony
The post-race party takes place at Grande Promenade and includes:
- Hot chocolate
- Craft beer from Armored Cow Brewery
- Mimosas for VIP registrants ($10 extra)
You can pick up your swag bag on Monday, December 30th, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Run For Your Life, at 1816 E Arbors Drive, and avoid lines on race day.

The New Year’s Day 5K presented by Atrium Health raises awareness about hunger challenges in Charlotte. The race proceeds will benefit Camino Food Pantry, Hope Street Food Pantry and Jamil Niner Student Pantry, all food pantries serving hundreds of families in need in University City.
