National Water Safety Month is an annual awareness campaign every May to ensure the public is reminded of safe swimming practices before increased swim activity over the summer. Drowning statistics are a harsh reality – it is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-5 and 2nd leading cause of death for children under age 14. Mecklenburg County has the highest number of deaths by drowning in NC, surpassing coastal counties.
To support this critical awareness campaign, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte is partnering with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to host Water Safety Together.
This event includes:
- Water safety in the pool with swim instructors
- Safety tips for emergency preparedness
- Life jacket how-to
- CPR demo (for older youth and teens)
Participants just need to bring their swimsuit and towel. The YMCA or Parks and Recreation will provide any other necessary equipment.
