OceanXperience is a new exhibit coming to Discovery Place Science, 168 W 6th Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, from May 24 to September 7, 2025.
You’ll find it on the 2nd floor of the museum. It’s appropriate for all ages groups, and is included in the price of admission.
The visuals and hands-on fun will appeal to kids, but there is also real science to explore. If you can get your kids to slow down and really engage in the activities, they’ll learn about the scientific process, testing hypotheses, and collecting data, as well as fascinating information about ocean life.
Learn all the ways to save money at Discovery Place Science, including senior discounts, military discounts, the Welcome Program and more.

OceanXperience takes participants onboard an interactive replica of OceanXplorer, the world’s most advanced research and filmmaking vessel.
Participate in a variety of missions focusing on researching humpback whales, orcas or great hammerhead sharks.
When you enter the exhibit you’ll put on a RFID wristband and sign in, indicating which of these animals you’d like to focus on. As you participate in each activity, your wristband will track your experiences, and when you’re finished you can see a recap of all your accomplishments.
Through the tactile experiences, holograms, and dynamic media, participants can:
- Tag orcas
- Sequence genes
- Use a projection microsope
- Dissect a fish
- Collect data
- Film underwater scenes
- Study whales’ behavior
- Navigate a ship
- Much more
