Floyd Cooper Day is a newly established literary holiday dedicated to collectively reading books by the late Floyd Cooper, the pioneering author-illustrator who portrayed authentic African-American experiences through his storytelling.
Cooper was known for his pastel-drawn illustrations depicting Black lives with historical accuracy. His works garnered numerous industry accolades, including three Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Citations and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award in 2009.
Main Street Books in Davidson is celebrating Floyd Cooper Day with a storytime by local author Tameka Fryer Brown on Friday, May 6th, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
She will be reading books by Floyd Cooper on the Summit Coffee Stage, 128 S Main Street, Davidson.
Afterwards, be sure to head next door to Main Street Books at 126 S Main Street, Davidson, and check out Cooper’s books for purchase. While you’re there also look for books by Tameka Fryer Brown. Her latest children’s book is the beautiful Brown Baby Lullaby, which has just been released as a board book.
