Joy in the Shadows is a new public art project coming to Plaza Midwood. Funded through a City of Charlotte Placemaking Grant, this project by artist Elizabeth Palmisano will feature a vibrant street mural, a laser-cut sculpture, and a constellation of smaller cameo sidewalk murals — all inspired by shadows captured by Plaza Midwood neighbors.
You can participate in an in-person Shadow Art Workshop on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 11 a.m., at the corner of Fulton Avenue and Roland Street. Rain date is June 29 at 11 a.m.
You’ll learn how to capture shadows using simple tracing techniques and then will explore the neighborhood to find your own. This is a free activity for all ages. Please RSVP here.
If you can’t make it to the in-person event you can still contribute to the project. When you spot a striking shadow or silhouette in Plaza Midwood, take ak picture and upload it to the collection portal. Your image might inspire elements of the final design.
Upcoming events include a community paint day in October and an art walk and reveal party.
