Opera Carolina is presenting a free collaborative art/music/poetry program celebrating Charlotte’s black culture.
Art • Poetry • Music: Celebrating Charlotte’s African-American community and the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a powerful, collaborative concert by Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, David Tang’s Firebird Arts Alliance’s Power of Song Project, Quentin Talley’s OnQ Productions and Opera Carolina.
Opera star baritone Reginald Smith, Jr. returns to Charlotte following his moving performance last year at APM, performing with the combined choirs of Opera Carolina, Firebird Alliance, Winthrop University Chamber Singers, Vox, Charlotte Contemporary Ensemble and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. APM fuses music, spoken word and visual art with readings of Dr. King’s iconic speeches, plus moving solos from the new Rhythm & Blues opera I DREAM that celebrates the legacy of Dr. King. Join us for this community celebration of Dr. King’s legacy, and Charlotte’s African-American community.
It takes place Monday, January 15th, 2018, at 7 p.m., at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road.
It’s free to attend, but register in advance.
