City of Charlotte residents, you can request a FREE tree to be planted in the city’s right-of-way in front of your property. This is either the grassy area between the sidewalk and the street or the city right-of-way by the street if there’s no sidewalk. To get an idea of what this means, look at the image below. The white trees are in the city’s right-of-way. The orange ones are not.

Please note that this is a different program than TreesCharlotte, which offers free trees at regularly scheduled Tree Adoption events for you to plant at the location of your choice on your property.
The Street Tree program is is a FREE service from the City of Charlotte’s Arborist Team. Just fill out this form and an arborist will visit your property to assess possible tree-planting locations and work with you to determine what best fits your needs and meets the city’s planting criteria.
When you fill out the form you can indicate what type of tree you’d like (large, small, flowering, shade, etc.)
Options on the form include:
- Large
- Small
- Shade
- Ornamental
- Flowering
- Has bright fall colors
- Supports wildlife
When the arborist visits, you and the arborist will discuss the best tree for the space.
The City of Charlotte will plant and maintain the tree.
NOTE: Tree-planting locations will be evaluated year-round, with planting occurring only between January and April.
