Touch Grass is a new way to meet up, unplug and just reset. These picnic-style pop-up events, organized by DJ Darryl “Greased” McNeil, have become popular, and for good reason.
They are low-stress, free and open to everyone, and are a great way to recharge at the end of the weekend. They’re not at crowded night clubs. You don’t have to buy expensive drinks. It’s not about impressing anyone.
DJ Darryl McNeil (follow @stay.greased on Instagram) spins mood-setting tunes. Bring your own blankets and chairs. You can bring your own picnic or snacks, but there will also be some vendors selling food.
But bottom line: there’s nothing that you need to buy. You just have to get there. It’s about connecting in nature, relaxing and just being yourself.
Touch Grass on Sept. 20
The next Touch Grass event is in partnership with Center City Partners. It takes place Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 3 to 8 p.m., at First Ward Park, 301 E 7th Street, Charlotte, North Carolina. RSVP here.
The theme is “Autumn Leaves,” and the suggested dress code is shades of brown.
Tip: If you’re driving in, you can park across the street in 7th Street Parking Garage, 224 E 7th Street, go down to The Market at 7th Street, make a small purchase, and get your parking validated for two hours.
Last time I was at The Market at 7th Street, there was a freezer cart full of King of Pops, which is a good choice! It’s Poppin! is also a good choice. Just make sure to get there before The Market closes at 6 p.m. And according to the page for It’s Poppin!, they close at 5 p.m.
If you take the light rail in, there’s a stop right at 7th Street.
