Cedar Grove Cemetery, 2400 Hildebrand Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, was once a 67 acres tract of land. Planned as a large African American cemetery, the land was apportioned to developers and the city of Charlotte over the last 100 years. All that remains of the once beautiful cemetery is around 1.8 acres of land with an unknown number of graves.
People still visit the graves, leaving small gifts, tokens, flowers and flags, but other than these gestures, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair and neglect.
Save Cedar Grove is a project to restore the cemetery and show respect to the people who are buried there. If you’d like to help, donations can help and there are volunteer opportunities as well (cleaning up the site or doing genealogical research.)
