Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation has been making some of the incredible trails in the county accessible to more people, with the introduction of all-electric All-Terrain Wheelchairs (ATWs.)
This program has been available since 2024. The ATWs are available to rent for free at several recreation and nature centers. Find all the information here.

People who need them in order to access the trails can reserve and rent them free of charge. It’s recommended that you make the reservations at least four days in advance (but they might be available day-of.) Both residents and non-residents can rent them.
You won’t need to transport the ATW, because you’ll check them out and in near trailheads in areas that are accessible. You might have to sue a sidewalk or go through part of a parking lot to get to the trailhead, but it will be accessible.
The ATWs are equipped with dual batteries that should last for 10 hours. Reservations are for a maximum of 3 hours, so there should be no worries about the batteries dying. If you do run into any problems, please call the nature or recreation center where you rented it, and they’ll help.
If you have additional questions, please email MeckCountyADA@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov or call 980-722-2345.
