This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.
As we approach the anniversary of 9/11, which has come to also be known as Patriot Day, we are putting together a list of ways to commemorate that date in the Charlotte region. There will be several ceremonies.
Charlotte 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
The 2022 Charlotte 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Truist Field, 324 S. Mint Street, Charlotte. This event is open to the community, and registration is limited to 1,000 participants. Advance registration has closed, but on-site registration is available. Registration costs $55.
The Star Climb supports the families of local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.
- Onsite registration: 7 a.m.
- Opening ceremony: 8 a.m.
- Climb start: 8:30 a.m.
- Climb end: 12 p.m.
9/11 Memorial Walk in Mooresville
Mooresville’s 9/11 Memorial Walk on Monday, September 11th, 2023. It starts at Town Hall, 413 N. Main Street, Mooresville, NC, at 9 a.m. From Town Hall, participants will walk silently to Liberty Park’s Veterans Promenade on N. Church Street. A brief ceremony will follow. Then Richard’s Coffee Shop, at 165 N Main Street, Mooresville, will be a gathering spot for camaraderie and refreshments.
9/11 Remembrance Ceremony in Cornelius
On Monday, September 11th, 2023, the Town of Cornelius is holding their annual observance at the Never Forget | 9/11 Monument at Cornelius-Lemley Fire Station #1, 19729 South Main Street, Cornelius, NC.
Starting promptly at 8:30 a.m., attendees, including members of our first responder and military community, will observe moments of silence and mark the critical moments of that day by tolling a bell. The ceremony will conclude at 11:30 a.m. with a plaque dedication for a local first responder and veteran who succumbed to a 9/11-related illness. The event is free and open to the public, and attendees are welcome to attend for the entire observance or drop in as they are able. First responders and military personnel are encouraged to wear their dress uniforms in attendance. If it rains the event will be held inside Fire Station #1.
- 8:30 a.m. – Opening prayer
- 8:46 a.m. – Hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
- 9:03 a.m. – Hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
- 9:37 a.m. – Hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon.
- 9:59 a.m. – The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.
- 10:03 a.m. – United Airlines Flight 93 passengers counterattack their hijackers, and the plane crashes in Shanksville, PA.
- 10:28 a.m. – The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.
- 11:00 a.m. – Members of the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue Department and the Brotherhood of the Carolina Retirees Association of the Fire Department of New York present a plaque in honor of fallen First Responder Robert Michael Foley, a New York City Firefighter and Vietnam Veteran US Army 82nd Airborne North Carolina.
City of Concord’s Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony
The City of Concord is holding a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, September 11th, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., at Concord Fire Station 8, 1485 Old Charlotte Road, Concord. The community is invited to honor the victims and the first responders.
