Ethan Uslan: ragtime piano
Pianist Ethan Uslan will bring ragtime, jazz, and stride piano to uptown Charlotte Oct. 20 as part of the Center City Concerts at St. Peter’s free noontime series.
Uslan has appeared on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion, stars in a viral video of “Fur Elise in Ragtime,” and is the reigning World Champion of Old-Time Piano Playing. For this upcoming concert he will showcase syncopated music inspired by people and places from around the world.
Uslan, who has lived in Charlotte for the last 10 years, has performed throughout the United States and Europe as a soloist and appearing with symphony orchestras, jazz bands, and improv comedy groups. He began his classical studies at the age of 9, and went on to study classical piano at Indiana University. Overloaded with Bach and Beethoven, Uslan began to play ragtime and jazz from the 1920s as a diversion. The syncopated music eventually took over, and he never looked back.
Uslan’s performances are filled with passion, humor, virtuosity, and a deep love for America’s rich musical past. His vast repertoire includes original arrangements of Civil-War era songs, New Orleans Jazz, Charlestons, blues, stomps, Harlem stride piano, swing, Cuban rumbas, and jazzed-up versions of classical masterpieces.
