The Trout Who Found the River is a whimsical musical play that blends live music, storytelling, and nature-inspired imagination for audiences of all ages.
Read on for several chances to see the musical and for a reception where you can meet the artists. All are free and are part of Charlotte SHOUT! and the Charlotte Ideas Festival.
Enjoy live music, storytelling, and a curious trout’s journey home. This is a new interactive musical about rivers, listening, and belonging.
Featuring original songs by composer Jonathan Woody inspired by folk traditions, the story follows a trout’s journey through rivers and landscapes, revealing the interconnected world of water, wildlife, and people.
Young audience members are invited to participate through listening prompts and musical field journals, encouraging them to observe, draw, and respond creatively to the sounds and stories of the natural world.
Free Outdoor Performances

There will be three FREE showings of the musical on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., at Wells Fargo Atrium, 329 S Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina. These performances are outdoor and family-friendly. Registration required.

An indoor reception will take place Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., in Wells Fargo Atrium, 329 S Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina. Registration required.
Spend an evening with the artists behind The Trout Who Found the River—a chance to experience the music and ideas behind this imaginative new work.
Presented with Charlotte SHOUT! and the Charlotte Ideas Festival, the event begins with a wine and cheese reception, followed by an intimate performance and a conversation with composer Jonathan Woody and the creative team about their artistic process, musical influences, and the story behind the piece.
