Many households in Charlotte experience food insecurity. Many neighborhoods don’t have a local source for fresh produce. Many people don’t have reliable transportation. And a lot of food goes to waste.
The Bulb is a community-led organization that addresses all of the above with sustainability-minded mobile farmers’ markets. Read on to learn how it works, where to find one of The Bulb’s mobile markets, and how to help.
How The Bulb Works

The Bulb partners with grocery stores like Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s and Costco to “rescue” food that the stores deem unsellable. Then The Bulb’s “Food Rescue Team” sorts, washes and repackages what is still quality produce. It composts the rest to make nutrient-rich soil for The Bulb’s Urban Farm.
The Bulb also receives donations of produce, mostly from small, sustainable farms across the Carolinas.
Then, The Bulb brings its mobile farmers’ market to neighborhoods that lack access to fresh produce. They currently operate at 13 locations, each on a weekly or twice a month basis.
The mobile markets are barrier-free There is no referral, registration, ID or payment required.
The Bulb simply offers guests their choice of fresh produce. No questions asked.
