The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and McColl Center are presenting Sown Together: New Voices in Contemporary Textile Art.
The exhibition, which on view at the Gantt Center, 551 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, from September 11, 2026, to January 24, 2027, showcases a new generation of artists who use innovative textile practices to explore identity, memory, migration, and the African diaspora, revealing how traditional materials can become powerful vehicles for contemporary storytelling.
The title plays on the shared sound of “sown” and “sewn,” linking seed cultivation with the act of bringing materials and people together. This duality runs throughout the exhibition, as artists draw on family histories, ancestral knowledge, cultural traditions, and personal experience to consider how identities are shaped, carried, and transformed across generations.

Opening Celebration
The opening celebration takes place September 11, 2026, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., at the Gantt Center and is free to attend.
The event also celebrates the opening of Repossessions and Yashua Klos: Cornerstones.
