Partisan Song
Dr. James A. Grymes, of UNC Charlotte, has written a new book, Partisan Song: A Holocaust Story of Resilience, Resistance, and Revenge, that tells the story of Moshe Gildenman (known as Uncle Misha.) Gildenman, an engineer and cultural leader in his hometown of Korets, Ukraine, escaped to the forest with his son, nephew and nine other Jews after the Nazis murdered 2,200 Jews in his community, including his wife and daughter. He carried only a revolver, five bullets and a Yiddish songbook.
From there, he devised a number of intricate missions, and the brigade raided storage depots, blew up trains, and attacked German garrisons. Even after the Nazis were driven out of Ukraine, Uncle Misha insisted on staying in the fight all the way to Berlin, until the last German was defeated.
Partisan Song Event
Dr. James A. Grymes and the University Chorale of UNC Charlotte present readings from Partisan Song interspersed with performances of songs that inspired heroism during the Holocaust – music from the Yiddish songbook that Gildenman carried through the war, reconstructions of songs he composed in the ghetto and forest, and beloved anthems such as “Zog nit keyn mol.”
Grymes will also briefly introduce each song and English translations will be projected onscreen.
The program will be followed by a reception where the book will be available for purchase and signing.
This program is presented by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is supported in part by the Crane Family Charitable Foundation and the Blumenthal Foundation.
