
Reedy Creek Nature Center’s Hummingbird Week is a popular annual August tradition in Charlotte. It takes place from August 11 to 17, 2025.
Read on for a list of some of the events. Make sure to follow each link and register, if required.
Most of the events take place at Reedy Creek Nature Center, but other nature centers and recreation centers might also have Hummingbird Week events and activities.
There’s also an art contest. Participants ages 5 and up can submit their hummingbird artwork to the nature centers (Reedy Creek, Quest, McDowell, Stevens Creek, or the nature space at Eastway Regional Recreation Center).
Artwork must be original work featuring a hummingbird, may be no larger than 9×12 inches, and must be safe to hang for wall display. AI generated images will not be accepted.
Important Dates for the Art Contest:
- July 9-July 23: Submit your art to your local nature center
- August 9-17: In-person voting at Reedy Creek Nature Center
- August 17: Winners announced at 3 p.m.

Hummingbird Week: Nature Hike

Enjoy an afternoon hike with the family at McDowell Nature Preserve. On this hike, explore hidden treasure hidden around the preserve. This hike will be on uneven terrain and will be approximately 2 miles. At some points, the group will be off trail. If bringing small children, strollers are not advised.

Drop-in to McDowell Nature Center anytime today between 9:15am-4:15pm to journey through the life of a hummingbird as a hummingbird during this challenge. Will you be able to get enough calories to survive? Can you escape predators?

Starting in the Reedy Creek Gardens we will delight in our Hummingbird friends and talk about what type of habitat needs they have. We will then journey onto the trails and into the woods to explore a variety of habitats, how they are used and who they share them with. Must be able to walk up to 2 miles on uneven terrain. Adult participation required if under 18.

The best way to know how to help hummingbirds is by doing research and keeping a close eye on their health. Susan Campbell will be trapping, measuring, and tagging hummingbirds at Reedy Creek and you can witness her work up close. Adult participation required if under the age of 18.
Susan is a licensed hummingbird bander and lead hummingbird researcher in North Carolina. She has been working with hummingbirds for over 15 years as a research affiliate with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
When you enroll you will select a 45-minute slot that will start every hour on the hour from 8 am to 11 am.
