This post is updated throughout the year to provide information on hours for various holidays. So you might see some information that doesn’t relate to the current holiday.
Mecklenburg County Government Holiday Hours

Mecklenburg County offices and services will be closed December 24 to 26, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
This includes all units of:
- Department of Social Services (DSS): Child, Family, and Adult Services*
- Department of Community Resources
- Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center
- Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center
- Public Health
- Elections Office
- Tax Collector
- County Assessor’s Office
- Register of Deeds Office
- Land Use and Environmental Services Agency Offices
Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Centers – Closed Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. Closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, 2026.
Park and Recreation:
- All Recreation and Senior Centers: Closed Dec. 24-26, 2025. On Dec. 31, sites will close early, at 6 p.m., and remain closed on Jan. 1, 2026.
- Indoor Aquatic Facilities: Closed Dec. 24-26, 2025. On Dec. 31, sites will close early, at 6 p.m., and remain closed on Jan. 1, 2026.
- Nature Centers: Closed Dec. 24-26, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2026.
- Parks: Open
- Seasonal Pools, Spraygrounds and Beach: Closed for the season.
City of Charlotte Holiday Hours
City of Charlotte Offices
Closed on City-recognized holidays:
- New Year’s Day (January 1st)
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day and day after Thanksgiving
- Christmas + one day
Solid Waste Services
- Christmas Day (Thursday customers will receive service on Friday, and Friday customers will receive service on Saturday)
- New Year’s Day: Normal pickup of garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS)
Christmas Schedule:
- Call Center, Lost and Found, Pass Sales and Information offices will be closed Dec. 25-26, 2025. Regular operations will resume Dec. 27.
- On Christmas Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 24, CATS bus routes, Blue Line and Gold Line will operate on a Saturday schedule.
- On Christmas Day, Thursday, Dec. 25, CATS bus routes, Blue Line and Gold Line will operate on a Sunday schedule.
New Year’s Day Schedule:
- Call Center, Lost and Found, Pass Sales and Information offices will be closed Jan. 1, 2026. Regular operations will resume Jan. 2.
- On New Year’s Day, Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, CATS bus routes, Blue Line and Gold Line will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library
All branches of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will be closed December 24 to 26, 2025.
Stores (for groceries)
Make sure to call ahead to check hours, as they might vary by location.
Open on Christmas Day
- Most CVS stores will be open, but hours may be affected. Most pharmacies will be closed. Check your CVS store.
- Most Walgreen stores will be open, but pharmacy hours may vary. Check your Walgreens store.
- Sheetz is open on Christmas Day
- 7-Eleven is open on Christmas Day
- QuikTrip is generally on open Christmas Day
- Common Market Plaza Midwood is open regular hours, 8 a.m. to midnight. The deli will not be open. 2007 Commonwealth Avenue, Charlotte, NC. More info.
- Super G Mart will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Day. 7323 E Independence Blvd, Charlotte, NC, and 10500 Centrum Pkwy, Pineville, NC. Announced on Facebook.
- Compare Foods Charlotte will be open Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Christmas Day 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Multiple locations. Announced in a Facebook Story.
Closed on Christmas Day
- Harris Teeter stores will close at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day
- Whole Foods Markets will be closed on Christmas Day
- Food Lion will close early on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day
- Lowes Foods will be close early on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day
- Weaver Street Market will close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day
- Wegmans will close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day
- Walmart will be closed Christmas Day
- Target will be closed Christmas Day
- Most other grocery stores will also be closed on Christmas Day
ABC Stores
Mecklenburg County ABC Stores are closed on Sundays and the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- MLK King Jr. Day
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth
- Independence Day
- Labor Day (with some exceptions)
- Veteran’s Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
