This post is updated throughout the year to provide information on hours for various holidays. So you might see some information that doesn’t relate to the current holiday.
In general on Martin Luther King Day:
- Government offices and services are closed
- Trash collection might be delayed
- Parks are open
- Recreation centers are closed
- Libraries are closed
- Stores are open
- ABC Stores are closed
- Public transportation is less frequent
Mecklenburg County Government Holiday Hours
Mecklenburg County government info.
Mecklenburg County offices and services will be closed January 19, 2026.
This includes all units of:
- Department of Social Services (DSS): Child, Family, and Adult Services*
- Department of Community Resources
- Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center
- Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center
- Public Health
- Elections Office
- Tax Collector
- County Assessor’s Office
- Register of Deeds Office
- Land Use and Environmental Services Agency Offices
- Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Centers
Park and Recreation:
- All Recreation and Senior Centers: Closed January 19
- Indoor Aquatic Facilities: Closed January 19
- Nature Centers: Closed January 19
- Parks: Open
- Seasonal Pools, Spraygrounds and Beach: Closed for the season.
City of Charlotte Holiday Hours
City of Charlotte Offices
Closed on City-recognized holidays:
- New Year’s Day (January 1st)
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day and day after Thanksgiving
- Christmas + one day
Solid Waste Services
- There will be no trash pickup from City of Charlotte on January 19. Crews will begin collecting Monday and Tuesday routes starting Tuesday, January 20, and will continue to work through the week until all routes are complete. There will be no Saturday collection.
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS)
Christmas Schedule:
- Call Center, Lost and Found, Pass Sales and Information offices will be closed Dec. 25-26, 2025. Regular operations will resume Dec. 27.
- On Christmas Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 24, CATS bus routes, Blue Line and Gold Line will operate on a Saturday schedule.
- On Christmas Day, Thursday, Dec. 25, CATS bus routes, Blue Line and Gold Line will operate on a Sunday schedule.
New Year’s Day Schedule:
- Call Center, Lost and Found, Pass Sales and Information offices will be closed Jan. 19, 2026.
- All CATS bus routes, the Blue Line and the Gold Line will operate on a Saturday schedule on Monday, Jan. 19.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library
All branches of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will be closed January 19, 2026.
Stores (for groceries)
Most stores are open regular hours on Martin Luther King Day.
ABC Stores
Mecklenburg County ABC Stores are closed on Sundays and the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- MLK King Jr. Day
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth
- Independence Day
- Labor Day (with some exceptions)
- Veteran’s Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
The ABC stores in most other counties are closed on the same holidays.
