
Historic Rosedale, at 3427 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC, is hosting several events for Black History Month in February, 2026. Most of the events are free to attend. Please make sure to follow the links below to register, as space is limited at some of the events.
Historical African American Educators Exhibit (Cellar)
February 1 to March 1, 2026
Highlights individuals throughout history who have been instrumental in promoting arts and education for African Americans. The exhibit is on view during the below events (except for the Afro Legacy Fest.)
Exhibition and talk with renowned artist Nellie Ashford

Nellie Ashford is a self-taught folk artist from the Charlotte area. Her mixed-media folk art depicts the experiences of Charlotte’s African-American community from the Jim Crow era to contemporary day in the U.S. South.
Her work has been featured in a number of special exhibits for many years, including an award winning show at the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte, the Delta Arts Center in Winston-Salem, the Gaston County Museum, and the Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte. In 2020, the Arts & Science Council and the Public Art Commission in partnership with the City of Charlotte commissioned a mural from Ashford to be displayed in the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Her work, entitled “Honoring All Teachers” can be seen at Concourse A.
Ms. Ashford will be showcasing and discussing various of her works, and will conduct a Q&A in the cellar kitchen at Historic Rosedale. Audience seating is limited to 30.
Afro Legacy Fest

This is a cultural presentation that celebrates and preserves Afro-descendant cultures across the African diaspora. The event will welcome guest representatives from Honduras, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Peru, who will share cultural histories and lead libation ceremonies honoring the land and the ancestors. Event is in collaboration with La Casa de la Cultura organization.
Black American Experience in the Carolinas

This event, developed by Historic Rosedale’s African American Legacy Committee, will explore the history of Black Americans of the area.
This free event will take place from 10-11:30am on Saturday, February 14, 2026, in the large cellar of the 1815 historic house. The original cellar of the home exhibits the kitchen and laundry space of the former plantation home as well as serves as an exhibit space highlighting the work of Historic Rosedale’s African American Legacy Project. Guests are invited to learn from the speakers who include Brandon Zachary as host, Janet Dyer, a retired Mecklenburg Historical Association docent, BeeJay Caldwell, author and historian, Tom Spada, Vice President and former chairman of the Historic Rosedale Board of Directors, Barbara Jackson, Chairman of the African American Legacy Committee, and Adreonna Bennett, UNC Charlotte Community Engagement Librarian/Archivist.
Mini Quilting Workshop

Attendees will learn the art of quilt making in the cellar of the Main House and will be able to take their mini-quilts home with them at the end of the workshop!
Participants will have the opportunity to work with Master Quilter, Naomi Rankin of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Quilting Chapter.
Handsewn Doll Workshop

Join African-American Legacy Project Coordinator and award-winning textile artist Margerette Joyner as she leads workshop participants in the art of crafting handmade dolls that replicate the ones enslaved women would have created for their own children.
The activity will take place in Rosedale’s kitchen cellar, and seating is limited to 15. Materials will be provided.
