Hispanic Heritage Month events with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library

Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 to October 15, 2026, is a time to celebrate the rich and varied cultures of Hispanic and Latino Americans, and the contributions that they have made to the United States.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is hosting some free events in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Please make sure to follow each link, below, to learn all the details and to register, if required.

On the third Thursday of each month, take on recreating a famous work of art. Come every time or just come for the pieces that interest you. This is not a class. It starts off with a brief history on the piece, as well as an overview of the techniques and the medium.

There will be a reference photo on display, as well as a variety of art supplies at your disposal to help you create your imitation. Feel free to bring your own art supplies as well. Just come paint, draw, relax, and socialize. This program is intended for adults.

In September, for Hispanic Heritage Month, render your own version of Amelia Peláez’s Marpacifico.

Hojalata (o-ha-LAH-tah), which means “tin” in Spanish, refers to a vibrant Mexican folk art that transforms simple tin into beautifully detailed, colorful designs using a technique called repoussé—hammering from the back to create raised patterns. Learn more about this art form and craft your own colorful version out of aluminum foil!

Fernando Llort is famous for his colorful and folk inspired art which became a culture reference for El Salvador. We will be using markers to color a small wooden jewelry box similar to the ones you find in the craft markets in El Salvador. Program is limited to the first 12 students. First-come, first-served.

During this hands-on craft program, participants will explore the colors, patterns, and decorative elements found in different forms of Mexican folk art. Several stations will feature hands-on activities inspired by these artistic traditions. There will be no formal presentation; instead, children and their families can move through the stations and participate freely at their own pace.

This drop-in program is designed for school-age children and their families. Registration is not required.

Día de los Muertos: Crea tu look de Catrina o Catrín | Create Your Catrina or Catrín Look

Join us for an evening of creativity inspired by the colorful Catrinas and Catrines of Día de los Muertos. Participants can explore different ways to create their own look through activities such as making festive headpieces and experimenting with decorations inspired by traditional Catrina and Catrín face designs. Come create, experiment, and discover some of the most recognizable imagery associated with this Mexican tradition.

Complete your look! We invite you to bring a festive dress or outfit to wear with your creation. If time allows, we may end the evening with a short Catrina and Catrín march accompanied by music.

All activity materials will be provided while supplies last.
