With many of our pollinators in alarming decline, the Great Southeast Pollinator Count is a positive way for all of us to help. Every August, in across states in the southeast, the public can become citizen scientists through counting pollinators.
It is very easy. By counting the number of pollinators observed on a single plant for 15 minutes, we help researchers understand the health of specific pollinator populations, give educators important information for sharing in their classrooms and deliver farmers/home gardeners insights as to which pollinators are in their areas.
Count with the Master Gardeners
Mecklenburg Extension Master Gardeners invite the public to come count with them at the demonstration garden at Freedom Park. Master gardener volunteers on hand to walk the public through the process. Counting sheets are provided and they take care of collecting the sheets for input.
This public counting event takes place Friday, August 21, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Freedom Park Master Gardener Demonstration Garden. Meet at the Mahlon Adams Pavilion, 2435 Cumberland Avenue, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Pre-Count Tours
In addition to holding this public counting event, the Master Gardeners are offering two optional pre-census tours of their garden. At the tours participants can meet our pollinator plants, hear more about our local pollinators and get a run down of the census. Everything is free but registration is required for the pre-count tours.
The tours take place:
- Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m.
- Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 2 to 3 p.m.
