One of the most beautiful spots in Charlotte to enjoy a coffee or wine is Rosie’s Coffee and Wine Garden. Rosie’s is on the grounds of McGill Rose Garden, 940 N. Davidson Street.
The rose garden is a city-supported park in the Belmont neighborhood of Charlotte. It was once a coal and ice yard. In 1950, Helen McGill, the wife of the new coal and ice yard owner, Henry McGill, started planting roses on the property, and over time, transformed the former industrial site to a lush oasis.
Starting in 1967, they opened the garden up to the public every Mother’s Day. In 1976 the City of Charlotte acquired the property, and the McGill Board started managing the Garden, which it still does. Now it’s open to the public every day, at no charge.
It’s a beautiful and tranquil spot to visit, made all the more special because it’s so close to the hustle and bustle of Uptown Charlotte. Believe it or not, the sound of the birds who have made the garden home drown out the traffic noise.
Although there is plenty blooming most months of the year, the prime months are May and October, when the roses are in full bloom.
The park is just 1.3 acres, but is a wonderland of many varieties of roses, as well as annuals, perennials, herbs and trees.
Rosie’s Coffee and Wine Garden is now drawing more and more people to the garden. It’s served wine for a couple of years, and just recently also started serving coffee. Seating is sprinkled throughout the garden, in every nook and cranny, from large picnic tables, to bistro tables under the trees, to Adirondack chairs around fire pits by the old coal car, a reminder of the garden’s industrial past.
