This one is a little farther away from Charlotte than some of the others, but for readers in the Fort Mill or Rock Hill area, it won’t be too bad of a drive, and it sounds like a great event. Meet the herd of more than 30 alpacas and llamas, as well as chicken and ducks. Feel the fleece, and take a selfie.
View live demonstrations in knitting, crochet and waving. Learn about raising and breeding alpacas. Shop for alpaca fleece products. Get an early start on holiday shopping! Please bring a non-perishable food item or dog or cat food for donation.
Fun facts about alpacas
- Alapacas and llamas can cross-breed. Their offspring are called huarizo.
- Their fleece is warmer than sheep’s fleece, not as itchy, and is hypoallergenic.
- They were domesticated by the Incas over 6,000 years ago.
- When they mate, the male emits a throaty vocalization called “orgling.” (I know you’re searching youtube now.)
- Their fleece comes in 22 colors.
- Their fleece is flame-resistant and water-resistant.
- They do spit when they’re annoyed, so don’t annoy them.
- They express their feelings toward each other by swishing their tails.
