Learn more about Dr. King’s connections to Charlotte in this article from Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.
Some things we learned are that he visited Charlotte in 1954, 1960, 1963 and 1966.
In 1963, Dr. King visited Charlotte to speak at six Black high schools before convocation.
In 1966 he returned to speak to more than 3,000 people at Johnson C. Smith University about moral action and his opposition to the war in Vietnam.
In 1980, the City of Charlotte dedicated a monument in Dr. King’s honor in Marshall Park. The statue was sculpted by Selma Burke, the same African American artist who sculpted the Franklin D. Roosevelt bust that appears on the dime.
