The Mecklenburg Amateur Radio Society (MARS) is holding its annual Field Day from Saturday, June 24, at 2 p.m., to Sunday, June 25, 2023.
For 24 hours they’ll be at The Park on Wilgrove, 7750 Jim Harper Lane, Mint Hill, NC.
Amateur radio operators will demonstrate how they serve the community in times of emergency and when there is a need for Auxiliary Communications.
The radio operators will spend 24 hours contacting stations throughout America and Canada as they would if there was a need to relay important information on behalf of served agencies such as the American Red Cross and Mecklenburg Emergency Management.
Most stations will operate on emergency power to simulate disruptions to the power grid. The event should be especially interesting to young people who are interested in science, electronics, and modern technology.
It’s free to come by, and you can visit any time during those 24 hours, although most visitors will stop by between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, and between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. There may be times in the middle of the night when the radio operators are not on the air.
This a great event for middle and high school students as MARS operates a “Get-On-The-Air” station where students can actually be talking on the radio and making contacts under the supervision of a control operator.
