Charlotte Museum of History is holding a free event, Indigenous Peoples Day: The Catawba Nation, on Saturday, March 26th, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Learn about the history and culture of the Catawba Nation.
Join Dr. Stephen Criswell, director of the Native American Studies Center at University of South Carolina Lancaster, for a free guided tour of “The Language of Clay: Catawba Indian Pottery & Oral Traditions,” a traveling exhibit designed by NAS in partnership with the Catawba Nation.
The exhibit features dozens of clay pottery pieces from the 19th century to the present. Each piece is created from clay dug from the flood plains of the Catawba River, from clay pits that have been in use by Catawba for thousands of years. Guided tours will be offered at 12pm and 2:30pm. Registration is required.
At 1 p.m., DeLesslin “Roo” George-Warren, Catawba Nation Citizen and consultant for the Catawba Cultural Center, will join the Museum for a livestreamed program that will introduce viewers to Catawba history and the importance of preserving Catawba language and pottery traditions.
Admission and events are free and open to the public. Tour space is limited and registration is required. Walk-ins slots may be available on the day of the event, but spaces are not guaranteed.
