The CineOdyssey Film Festival celebrates and gives voice to filmmakers of color from the African, Caribbean, Latino, Asian, and Native American diasporas as well as the U.S. It serves to bring together diverse audiences, bridge cultural understanding, and encourage the artistic development of aspiring filmmakers.
CineOdyssey is presenting a Film Showcase in June, 2023, in hour of Juneteenth and Black Music Month. The films will be screened at The Independent Picture House, 4237 Raleigh Street, Charlotte, NC. One of the films, WattStax, is free, and also includes pre-show entertainment.

The past and present collide as three generations of Angolan women grapple with the aftermath of civil war. Nayola, the daughter who goes missing in search of her freedom fighter husband, Yara the granddaughter, a rebellious, subversive teenage rapper, and Lelena, the sage grandmother who tries to shield Yara from the police. Filmed with a bold color palette, “Nayola” is a mythic, thrilling story about the legacy of war uniquely told from a female perspective.
