Cornelius Parks & Recreation is hosting its second Cardboard Boat Regatta. It will take place Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Jetton Park, 19000 Jetton Road, Cornelius, North Carolina.
This is a rescheduled date, due to the forecasted weather on May 2.
Teams will race homemade boats consisting primarily of cardboard and duct tape on Lake Norman.
It’s FREE to watch!
Awards will be given for the winners of the boat race, as well as in the categories of Best Decorated, People’s Choice and the Titanic Award (best sinking.)
The cost to race is $25 per team for Cornelius residents and $35 per team for non-residents. Only one member of the team (preferably the captain) needs to register. Register here. Registration ends on May 4, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. If you’re seeing this too late to register for this year, why not go and get some ideas for next year?
All team members must be at least 8 years old. There’s no limit to the number of sailers but they must all fit in the boat.
It’s free to watch the races.
For more information, or questions about the rules, email Emily Halden at ehalden@cornelius.org or call 704-892-6031 ext. 168. You can also email her if you need large cardboard! They have some you can pick up.
