It seems that in the last few years, we all rediscovered some low-key activities these days, and a visit to the CLT Airport Overlook fit right into that plan.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport is one of the few airports in the United State that maintains a public viewing area.
The CLT Airport Overlook offers a close-up, unobstructed look at planes as they take off, with the Charlotte skyline in the background.
This is an ideal place for aspiring artists or photographers to practice their craft. Of course, kids love it. And aviation enthusiasts can spend an afternoon identifying the different planes that take off or land.
Important update: The CLT Airport Overlook at 7300 Airport Overlook Drive, is closing on October 3rd, 2022, due to construction. Read on to learn about a temporary Airport Overlook, and the permanent solution.
Temporary Airport Overlook
The new temporary Overlook location will open October 17th, 2022. It’s near the current site, almost at the corner of Old Dowd Road and Airport Overlook Drive. Drivers will need to use Wilkinson Boulevard to Marshall Drive. Signage will direct drivers to the Overlook.
It will remain free to visit.
Permanent Airport Overlook
A new permanent Airport Overlook is in design. It will be very close to Old Dowd Road, and will feature airfield, skyline and terminal views, modern amenities (restrooms), paved parking and an expanded food truck staging area. Stay tuned!
Airport Overlook Food Truck Schedule
During the warmer months of the year, food trucks and food carts are at the Overlook on the weekends. Most often, you can find Italian Ice, but sometimes more substantial fare. Check the schedule here.
