Charlotte Contra Dancers is a group that meets regularly for dances at Mecklenburg Shrine Club, 5200 Mecklenburg Shrine Club Road, Charlotte, North Carolina.
Contra dance is an American folk dance influenced by a wide variety of cultures. Music is either live or recorded, and there’s always a caller, who will announce the next move of the dance. It’s a partner dance, but you dance with everyone else too, not just your own partner, and you do not need to bring a partner.
Charlotte Contra Dancers events start with a beginner lesson 30 minutes before every dance, covering the basic moves of the dance. Learn more about Contra dancing and Charlotte Contra Dancing here.
On Monday, the dance lesson starts at 7 p.m., and the dance is from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
There’s also a monthly Sunday dance. It takes place on September 14, 2025. It starts with a beginner lesson at 3 p.m., with the dance from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The cost is a sliding scale, depending on whether the event has live or recorded music:
- Live Music $12-15; Students $10-15; Children under 12 are free
- Recorded Music $8-12; Students $6-12; Children under 12 are free

- Monday, Sept. 1 – Special Labor Day Dance – Traditional recorded music, with the Callers’ Collective. Ice cream social at the break.
- Monday, Sept. 8 – Live Music – Contraposto with Callers’ Collective.
- Sunday, Sept. 14 – Live Music- Curious George with David Winston calling. Meetup for pizza afterwards.
- Monday, Sept. 15 – Waltz Night (7:00 – 9:15pm)- waltz to recorded music. Experienced waltzers will be available to work one-on-one with newcomers or those who would like to tweak their moves. Donations are accepted but not required.
- Monday, Sept. 22 – Recorded music with Stephanie Marie calling.
- Monday, Sept. 29 – Live Music – the Ed Woo Band with Dean Snipes calling.
