Charlotte Contra Dancers is a group that meets regularly for dances at Mecklenburg Shrine Club, 5200 Mecklenburg Shrine Club Road, Charlotte, North Carolina.
Contra dance is an American folk dance influenced by a wide variety of cultures. Music is either live or recorded, and there’s always a caller, who will announce the next move of the dance. It’s a partner dance, but you dance with everyone else too, not just your own partner, and you do not need to bring a partner.
Charlotte Contra Dancers events start with a beginner lesson 30 minutes before every dance, covering the basic moves of the dance. Learn more about Contra dancing and Charlotte Contra Dancing here.
On Monday, the dance lesson starts at 7 p.m., and the dance is from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
There’s also a monthly Sunday dance. It takes place on September 14, 2025. It starts with a beginner lesson at 3 p.m., with the dance from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The cost is a voluntary sliding scale, with the range depending on whether the event has live or recorded music:
- Live Music $12-15; Students $8-15; Children under 12 are free
- Recorded Music $8-12; Students $6-12; Children under 12 are free

- Monday, October 6, 7 p.m.: Caller Shelby Owensby with recorded pop music
- Sun, October 12, 3 p.m.: Legendary contra musician Larry Unger with guest fiddler Teri Abler and Caller Tom Macklin
- Monday, October 13, 7 p.m.: Open waltz to recorded music
- Monday, October 20, 7 p.m.: Band Contraposto with Caller Dean Snipes
- Monday, October 27, 7 p.m.: Halloween Dance – Recorded music with Caller Stephanie Marie. Special refreshments and prizes for best costumes!
