Bandcamp Friday is Aug. 1: artists keep all the revenue from music that you purchase

Bandcamp is an online music platform where artists can sell their music directly to fans, unlike streaming services, which pay a minuscule amount to artists. One popular streaming service pays artists an average of $.004 per stream. Yes, that means less than half a penny per stream.

Bandcamp, on the other hand, keeps just 10-15% of the revenue from sales. You can purchase both digital and physical media.

Maybe it doesn’t matter that much to artists with billions of streams, but it definitely matters to independent artists just trying to make a living with their music. So if you love music, you might want to commit to occasionally buying directly from an independent artist, and one easy way is on Bandcamp.

Several times a year, during Bandcamp Friday, Bandcamp waives their revenue share and passes the funds directly to artists.

Bandcamp Fridays started in March 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, to help artists keep going when venues were closed, and it’s become a regular event. It’s the perfect time to show your appreciation for your favorite artists by putting a little more money into their pockets.
