An unsung gem among Merchant Ivory’s E.M. Forster “trilogy”–which includes A Room with a View (1986) and Howards End (1992)–Maurice adapts Forster’s novel based on his experienceas a gay man in Edwardian England. Featuring stellar early-career performances by James Wilby, Hugh Grant, and Rupert Graves, cinematography by Pierre Lhomme (Army of Shadows) and a stirring score by Academy Award-nominated Richard Robbins(Howards End, The Remains of the Day), Maurice tells a story of isolation and self discovery that finds new resonance as times–and audiences–change.
