You might want to plan purchases for the first weekend in August. From Friday, August 5th, 2011, until Sunday, August 7th, there will be no North or South Carolina state tax on certain items. If you look below, you’ll see that there are some important differences between the two states’ tax holidays. South Carolina’s tax holiday is less restrictive than North Carolina’s. For complete information, click on the links below. Some retail establishments will be offering additional sales and extended shopping hours during this time.

North Carolina

Exempt from state, local, and use taxes

Clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item
school instructional materials of $300 or less per item
sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item
computers of $3,500 or less per item
computer supplies of $250 or less per item


Not exempt from state taxes

Clothing accessories
jewelry
cosmetics
protective equipment
wallets
furniture
items used in a trade or business
rentals

South Carolina

Exempt from state, local, and use taxes

printers and printer supplies

bath wash clothes, blankets
bed spreads, bed linens, sheet sets, comforter sets, bath towels, shower curtains, bath rugs and mats, pillows, and pillow cases.

Not exempt

watches
furniture
rental of clothing or footwear
items for use in a business
items placed on layaway or similar deferred payment and delivery plans
