comet viewing partyTown Creek Indian Mound, at 509 Town Creek Mound Road in Mount Gilead is sharing its telescopes and clear skies for comet viewing parties each night from March 10th, 2013, through March 16th, from 6pm to 8pm. View the comet C/2011 L4, also known as PANSTARRS for the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii that discovered it, before ir sets just after sunset each night. Participants can also use the telescopes to see the craters on the moon.

Mount Gilead is just over an hour’s drive from Charlotte. Town Creek a state historic site that focuses on archaeological research on the Indians whose cultural tradition dates from the 11th century A.D. in the Pee Dee River Valley. Special events are held on the site, which is always free to visit, and some of the most popular are the star-gazing parties that take place throughout the year.
