First Saturdays at Hezekiah Alexander Homesite 11/3/12

After some time of being closed to the public, Charlotte Museum of History, 3500 Shamrock Drive, is once again inviting the public to visit Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, but on a limited basis. They are hosting “First Saturday” events. The next one will be Saturday, November 3rd, 2012, from 1pm to 5pm. The cost is $5, cash only. Free for kids under 5 and museum members. Here’s what will happen: Follow costumed docents on a tour through a reconstructed kitchen, rebuilt spring house, and the Hezekiah Alexander house, the oldest house still standing in Mecklenburg County. Learn more about daily life as docents demonstrate cooking techniques, weaponry, and weaving. These tours will also mark the official unveiling of new bedcoverings in three of the Alexander House’s bedchambers. Funding for these new bedcoverings was made possible through the sponsorship of the Mecklenburg Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; with matching funds provided through a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Roberta Morris. The new bedcoverings more authentically represent what you might find in the Alexander household in the 1700s and were custom made by Thistle Hill Weavers, whose textiles have been used for the John Adams HBO miniseries, Master and Commander, and Boardwalk Empire, among others. Along with the tours of the house, kitchen, and spring house, there will be a hands-on table where you can handle artifacts, play with colonial toys, learn colonial games, and dress up in period costumes.
