If you’ve driven down North Davidson Street in the last year or so, you’ve probably noticed the amazing mural being painted on the underside of Matheson Bridge. The mural, painted by William Puckett, commemorates the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20th, 1775. Fittingly, the mural will be officially unveiled on Meck Dec Weekend. Saturday, May 19th, from 4pm to 6pm, the bridge will be unveiled during a street party. It’s at North Davidson Street and Matheson Street. Other festivities will include the May 20th Society’s reenactors, who will be onsite firing their cannons and muskets, live bluegrass music, and a limited edition Captain Jack Pilsner from Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, with a label featuring Captain Jack from the bridge.
Some other events are taking place around this celebration too. Here is a summary:
3pm – 3:30pm: Walking tour of Noda, starting at Revolution Pizza, 3228 North Davidson Street, and ending at the bridge.
4pm – 6pm: Matheson Bridge Unveiling, bluegrass music, May 20th Society reenactors, beer tastings
4pm – 6pm: “Standing Gallery” of art along North Davidson Street. Artists will be showing their work.
6pm – 6:30pm: 2nd half of walking tour, returning to Revolution Pizza
