One of the most popular area festivals is coming up soon. On May 15, the Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival takes place at Ramsey Creek Park from 11am to 5pm. The festival includes the Miss Asian Festival Pageant, authentic Asian food, live music and dance, and cultural displays, but the highlight is the dragon boat races. Each colorful is boat is manned (and womanned) by 20 paddlers and a drummer. Corporate and non-profit groups form the teams, which raise money for charity.

It costs $850 for an organization to register a rowing team, but there’s a way for you to participate…for free.

Crossroads Charlotte is an organization devoted to increasing understanding between groups in Charlotte and all-around community building, with the goal of creating the future that we want to see. They have FIVE dragon boats to man for the races, and they need rowers to fill them. Rowers must be at least 15 years old. No previous rowing experience is needed. This is a unique opportunity to share in the fun for FREE. Also, all rowers for Crossroads Charlotte will be entered into a raffle for a $30 gift certificate to an Asian restaurant. For more information on the Xchange Crews, visit the Facebook event page. To register, email info@crossroadscharlotte.org.

  1. Rowers pull oars that are hinged on their boat. Moving in the direction their back is turned.
Dragon Boat racing is high intensity PADDLING and the fastest growing water sport world wide.
    Have fun Paddling!

  2. The Wachovia/Well/Quail Hollow PGA tournament seems to always occur near or ‘at’ the same time as the Dragon Boat Races. When it does, people often opt to be ‘at the lake’ paddling a Dragon Boat than on the sidelines of Tee 3. The Dragon Boat “LEADER BOARD” is truly a whole lot more exciting than watching somebody whack at a ball, and you’ll get great exercise to boot!!

  3. what i love about asian foods is that they are always tasty and spice,”,
